Kickball/Wiffleball Studyguide

1)  Base Hit - To reach base safely without an error or out made.

2)  Bases Loaded - A base runner occupies each base.

3)  Clean the Bases - A hit ball that scores all runners on base.

4)  Cut Off - A person who catches a thrown ball in order to relay it to it's desired base.

5)  Diamond - The area and shape formed by the four bases.

6)  Double Play - Two outs resulting from one hit or kicked ball.

7)  Error - Defensive misplay.

8)  Fair Ball - Any ball hit or kicked that is either touched or stops in fair territory.  A ball is also fair if it crosses from fair to foul beyond 1st or 3rd base.

9)  Fair Territory - That area in between an imagery line leading from home plate to 1st and 3rd base.

10)  Fielder's Choice - Ruling when a person reaches base safely after a kicked or battled ball due to anther runner being put out.

11)  Fly Ball - A hit or kicked ball which travels high into the air before touching the ground.

12)  Force Out - An out occurring when the runners are forced to run and the defensive  player with the ball steps on the base trying to be reached by a base runner.

13)  Foul Ball - A ball hit outside of fair territory.

14)  Grand Slam - A home run with the bases loaded.

15)  Grounder - A hit or kicked ball which bounces or rolls along the ground.

16)  Infield - Fair territory inside the base paths.

17)  Innings - A division of the game whereby each team will have the same number of turns batting.  The number of innings determines the length of a game.

18)  Line Drive - A hit or kicked ball that travels in a straight line.

19)  Out - The retirement of a batter/kicker, or base runner.  Three outs per inning.

20)  Outfield - Fair territory outside the base paths.

21)  Over Run - To run beyond the base.  The only base that may be run without possibility of being tagged out is first base.

22)  Over Throw - To throw above the baseperson or fielder's head.

23)  Pop Up - A short, high fly ball in or near the infield.

24)  RBI - A run batted/kicked in.

25)  Sacrifice Fly - The ruling when a fly ball is caught, allowing a base runner to score.

26)  Tag - to touch a base runner with the ball.  The base runner is out if he/she was not on a base.

27)  Tag Up - A base runner must touch or retouch the base which he/she occupies before advancing to the next base on an fly which is caught in the air.

28)  Triple Play - Three outs recorded on one hit or kicked ball.

Rules of Kickball and Whiffleball:

1.  Players

    A) If there are 9 players on each team, each team will have a pitcher, catcher, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd basepersons, as well as a shortstop and 3 outfielders.

    B) The pitcher stands at the top of the key.  All others must be behind the half court line.

2.  Batting

    A) When batting, each team will supply it's own pitcher.  Pitchers will be determined by whomever was batting when the last out was made the previous inning.

        1.  Pitcher cannot touch any hit or kicked ball.  If the ball is touched by the pitcher, the batter is automatically out.

        2.  Pitcher does not have to wait for the defense to be ready.  This means HUSTLE!

    B) There are no:

        1.  Bunting

        2.  Walks

        3.  Stealing - a runner leaving the base before the ball has been hit or kicked will be out.

    C) Pitches

        1.  Kickball - 3 pitches

        2.  Whiffleball - 5 pitches

        3.  Batter/Kicker will be declared out if none of the allowed pitches are hit/kicked into fair territory.

3.  Gym Rules

    A) Home Run - any hit or kicked ball that hits either the side wall in fair territory, or the back wall.

    B) Do over - any hit or kicked ball that gets stuck.

    C) Outs

        1.  Any ball that hits the ceiling or bleachers and is caught in the air is an out.  A ball that bounces more than 1 time on top of the bleachers is played as if it were a groundball.

    D) Play On!

        1.  Any ball that hits the ceiling is played like any other ball when considering if it is fair or foul.

4.  Length of Game

    A) A game is played until the teacher blow the whistle indicating the end of the game.

    B) Final score stands.  Score does not revert back to last complete inning.
