Soccer Studyguide

Introduction

Soccer is the most popular team sport in the world and is the fastest growing team sport in the United States.  Soccer is inexpensive to play, provides continuous action for all players, and is FUN!  Players of all sizes can enjoy themselves and have the potential to become star soccer athletes.  As a nonviolent outdoor sport, soccer is healthy for all boys and girls.

Essential Skills

The essential soccer skills are dribbling for individual movement with the ball, kicking for a pass or a shot on  the goal, and heading for placement and scoring.

Team Play

Once the athlete masters the individual skills through training, the individual players can combine and utilize the skills for effective and enjoyable team play.  A variety of games can be practiced to develop the team concept.

Size of Field

The field of play shall be rectangular, with a length of 100 yards and a width of 50 yards.  The playing field shall be marked with distinct boundary lines.  The field size may be increased or reduced depending on the ability and age of the players.

The field shall have a mid-field line (40 yard line), equal distance from each end line.  The center shall be marked and a circle with a 10 yard radius shall be around the center mark.

The penalty area at each end of the field shall be 18 yards x 44 yards.  *In PE class the penalty area is from the 20 yard line towards the goal.

Goal size shall be 24 feet wide by 8 feet high.  *In PE class the net size is much smaller which allows the goalie to defend the goal much easier.

Number of Players

An official soccer game is played between two teams, each having not more than 11 players, one of who shall be the goalie.

Goal Kick - is awarded to the goalie if one of the offensive players kicked or touched the ball before it goes over the goal line.

Corner Kick - is awarded to the offensive team if one of the defensive players kicked or touched the ball before it goes over the goal line.
